Chapter 24

This is the last chapter in the book! Henry and his regiment were ordered to retrace their steps back to the river. While doing so Henry was thinking about the past and how much of a coward and a scaredy cat he was, and always running from the battles. But then he soon forgets about it and just thinks about the present and how well he was fighting in the battles. Henry sat in the rain and just thought about how good life would be if there wasn't any fighting and everyone got along with one another. As he was thinking about this a ray of sunshine came down from the sky.

I dont think the book should end! I wanted to see him go home and reconnect with his mother...

So did Henry's regiment defeat the rebels for good?

Chapter 23

In this chapter Henry and Wilson are told that them and their regiment need to charge the enemies fence or else they will be charged and killed. Henry and Wilson listen and fight with all their might. They see that the flag carrier for the rebels has been shot so there fore they want to go get it, they believe that this would be a very big accomplishment. So Henry and Wilson go and capture it. They were proud of one another. Along with taking they flag they also capture 4 other prisoners. 

Why would they capture 4 soldiers from the rebels? What do they want outta them?

Chapter 22

In this chapter there was once again another surprise attack. Henry can see the other regiments fighting off the rebels then he runs up with the flag and also starts fighting along with his regiment. Henry gets so close to the rebels that he can see their faces. He also sees many men die or get shot. He finds himself protection while fighting and he sees Wilson but knows that he will fight until his death. Not a lot of men were smart enough to find protection while they were still alive. 

Why wouldn't they try to hide behind some fences so they don't die?

Chapter 21

In this chapter the soldiers are very happy that they had a victory but as they were celebrating a different commander came up and told them that if they would have gone 100 more yards they would have been successful. After told that they men felt as they let themselves down. They thought they did an excellent job by just killing so many rebels. After they thought they weren't good fighters a young soldier comes up and tells Henry and Wilson that he over heard the lieutenant talking that they were the best 2 soldiers on the regiment. They kind of just ignored that comment though. Also the same officer who called them mule drivers called them mud diggers because they ran away during the battle. 

Why wouldn't it be counted as a victory? They killed many rebels. 

Chapter 20

In this chapter the regiment continues to fight. Henry and Wilson continue to carry the flag. They soon fight over who is going to be the only carrier, and finally Henry pushes Wilson away so that he is the only one. The soldiers keep fighting but get pushed back into the trees because the enemy keeps firing and more and more men die. Henry keeps hoping for a victory because of the officer who said that they were worthless and that their fighting skills were like mule drivers. Henry gets angry and takes the lead and Wilson tells him goodbye because he doesn't think that he will make it through but Henry tells him to shut up that they will. After all the smoke had cleared out they had seen that they defeated the enemy once again.

Chapter 19

In this chapter the battle is just beginning. Henry and Wilsons regiment are told not to fire until the rebels get closer. There were many men that got shot by bullets to the left and right of Henry and he was very stunned by all of that happening so close to him. As the commander told them to fight the men just laid there and didn't move. No one moved until Wilson fired the first shot, and then all of a sudden they sprang up and started the battle. As the men were fighting they moved across the field to a different place. While moving positions many men got shot. One of the main guys who got shot was carrying the U.S flag. After it was dropped Henry and Wilson pick it up and start carrying it.

At the beginning of the book Henry was scared of fighting, and he ran away from two battles. In running away from the battles he made himself feel guilty for his actions. And then in chapters 17 and 18 he fought in two battles and in those two his regiment did very well, Henry acted as though he wasn't afraid of anything. Even his commander mentioned that if everyone would fight like him that they would have wiped away the rebels in a week.  I think he did this because during these battles he was fighting with Wilson.

Wilson has changed from the loud private and ordering everyone around to being a quiet soft hearted person. Wilson wrote a letter to his family and put it in an envelope gave it to Henry to deliver. But then when Henry and Wilson met back up later in the story he asked for it back. In the early part of the story he didn't want to admit that he was actually scared of dying and fighting. And in the later parts of the story he changed became quiet and soft hearted. For instance when he had heard Henry got hurt he stayed by his side and made sure everything was going to be okay. Wilson gave up his bed for Henry and got Henry food and drinks during this time. Wilson pretty much acted like his father by bandaging up his head. Instead of starting fights he broke them up. During the battles Henry and Wilson became very close friends. I believe in a Father Son sense! 

Chapter 18

In this chapter Henry comes upon a wounded soldier named Jimmy. Jimmy was wounded and so Henry was trying to find water but there was no water to be found. At the same time the rebels had started up again. Henry's regiment was told to line up and be ready to fight. Henry over heard his commander talking and he had mentioned that they may not make it out alive. After that said Henry and Wilson both look at each other and they are ready to fight. 

Why wouldn't they make it out alive?

Chapter 17

In this chapter the fight breaks out and Henry acts like he has gone crazy. He is actually fighting on the front line. The battle didn't last long and the enemy was driven back to where they came from. The general made a comment on how well Henry was fighting and that if all the soldiers were like that then they would win the battle in a week. After hearing this Henry thinks highly of himself and thinks he is the best soldier.

Why wouldn't Henry fight like this before? Why would he be so scared if that is how he can fight?

Chapter 16

In this chapter, the men start to march once again because another battle is about to take place, different from the other battles Henry going to fight in this one. Henry soon starts to voice his opinion on why they haven't won any battles lately and he blames it on the leadership that his regiment had. Before the battle began the generals moved their regiment into the Forest, Henry didn't like this idea either and he complained about it because he believed that the enemies were waiting for them in the Forest.

How can Henry complain about leadership if he's never out there?

Chapter 15

In this chapter, Henry remembered that he still had the yellow envelope that Wilson gave him in case he died. Right when Henry was about to give it back he thought to himself and decided to keep it. But it ended up that Wilson asked for it anyways so Henry gave it to him. Wilson soon was embarrassed because he read the note that was in there, and it was talking about how scared he was of the battles.

Why wouldn't Henry just return the envelope in the first place instead of trying to keep it?

Chapter 14

In chapter 14, Henry woke up to the sound of fighting. Wilson was talking to Henry about how he was feeling Henry had said that he wasn't feeling the greatest. While Wilson was attending to Henry they began talking about the war and how they thought it was going. At this time Henry also told Wilson that Jim had died. Wilson told Henry that their regiment lost over half their men the day before during battle. But it ended up that most of them were just hiding in the woods kind of like Henry does. During their talk Henry realized that Wilson is no longer the loud soldier he used to be instead he is calm and quiet. 

If they can hear the battle why didn't Wilson go and fight?

Chapter 13

In this chapter, Henry meets up with Wilson again. Wilson and Henry talk for quiet a bit, and then Henry told Wilson that he had gotten shot in the head. Wilson felt very sorry for Henry so he took him to the nurses so that they could take care of him. Henry enjoys the attention that he gets very much. Henry didn't get shot he got hit by the butt of a gun but won't fess up that that's what really happened.

How can't they see that he didn't really get shot? Will those guys continue to fight?

Chapter 12

In this chapter, Henry realizes that all the soldiers are running toward him. He didn't understand why they were doing this so he attempted to grab one of them and ask but the soldier he tried asking didn't want any part of his question and ordered Henry to let go but of course he didn't so then the soldier smoked him in the head and knocked him out. Henry then realized that he also had to get to his feet and start running.

Why wouldn't Henry just let him go, I mean obviously all the soldiers were running for a reason.

Chapter 11

In this chapter, Henry hears the battle get started again. He sees all the soldiers walking and he decided that this is time to go. So he makes his way to the front line. But then he had no rifle so he backed down like a coward one more time. He had to think of exccuses of why he wasn't fighting or why he wasn't hurt. He didn't want the men back at the camp to think less of him than what they already do. He feels guilty for what he did.

Why didn't he get a dead guys rifle? Its not like their going to use it again.

Chapter 10

In this chapter, Henry is still waundering around with the tattered soldier. They were talking and after the tattered soldier mentioned that he also didn't feel the best Henry thought he was going to witness another death but the tattered soldier made sure Henry knew that he had a family to get back to that he was not about to die. After Henry was mistaken for the tattered soldier's friend, he left because he was getting stuff thrown in his face like where's your wound at, etc.

Why would Henry not want to go fight if he keeps getting critized?

Chapter 9

In Chapter 9 Henry gets re accuainted with Jim! Jim was very happy to see Henry at first because he thought he might of died. After they were talking for a while Henry realized that Jim was hurt and Jim told Henry that one of his fears was getting run over by an artillary cart. Henry wanted to help move Jim off the battle field but Jim didn't want help and ordered Henry to move and not touch him. Not much longer after Jim had said that and start trying to walk away he died.

Why would Henry ignore that he said that if Jim was in that bad of conditon? Wouldn't you ignore your friend and try to get them healthy again?

Chapter 8

In chapter 8 Henry once again hears the sound of a battle happening, but once again he also doesn't go to fight, he stays back. While he was walking around he started talking to an injured soldier and in which the injured soldier started asking him many questions and he asked if he was hurt but Henry wasn't so he made his way through the crowd and away from the other soldier.

Why doesn't Henry just go to the battle line if he always feels guilty?

I think she's always in the back of his mind so he doesn't want to get hurt or die because then he'll be leaving her so he always runs from the battles. She's kind of like his consciences because she's always there with him not literally but figuratively. Especially because she didn't want him to go and he just signed up to go on his own.

4. How does Henry use the squirrel to justify his actions?
He shows how its natural for things in nature to run from things their scared of. So he throws a nut at a squirrel to justify his beliefs.

Chapter 7

In this chapter Henry walks away from everyone and thinks to himself. He felt angry because he wasn't there to help defeat the enemy but I took it as he blamed his regiment? Since he felt jealous over his regiment I believe he is back to being a coward. He had gained so much but lost it in only one chapter. In the beginning he thought he was smart for not fighting but then after the win becomes very jealous. After walking through the timber he thought that Nature was crazy for still living in those conditions. After walking somemore he stubbled across a dead soldier, this dead person scared him so much that he wouldn't walk with his back because he thought it may spring up and do something horrible. He exchanged a look with the corpse for a very long time. I believe that this so far is one of the most interesting chapters.

Why would he be angry at his fellow army men if they won the battle? Was he jealous?

Chapter 6

Once again a battle has broke out. Henry was frightened by this battle though, after having so much courage after the last one, he went down hill fast. The enemies wanted revenge this time so they came charging upon Henry's regiment. Many men from the front line back down and run away(includes Henry). Henry had very bad thoughts about this battle and how he felt that the Enemy would over run his army. After having these fears a genral came up to him and told him that he front line had held them back.

Why did Henry run? Was he just that scared?

I felt as though Henry was not loyal to his army during this battle since he backed down.

Chapter 5

In chapter 5 Henry and his fellow army men were at the front line fighting. Henry's captain was giving orders from behind the regiment. This battle was a very intense and bloody one. Henry couldn't decide whether or not he should fire shots off. After thinking he did not want to be an outcast he started firing left and right putting the shots off. Many men died during this chapter including his captain. During the battle the men made up chants and cheers to go along with how they felt. After the fighting was done it was like a ray of happiness that fell upon them. Many were quiet surprised that Nature was still there.

Since the Captain died will that bring Henry further up the line of importance? How far up?

Chapter 4

In this chapter the army is found in a grove and listening to gun shots being fired. In this chapter many people get injured. Henry's commander gets shot in his hand. Some of the characters say that they get hurt when they really don't all just so they don't have to fight.

This is one of the shortest chapters yet. It was kind of an easy chapter to follow up to the ending because that didn't make much sense to me. There were many people who got injured during this chapter also

Chapter 3

In this chapter the army was marching around the battle field because they heard shots fired. When they were marching around most of the veteran soldiers were out in front. You could tell they were veteran by the kind of/ color of hat they wore. While Henry was in battle he was trying to observe everything and anything that was going on. He stumbled over many trees, branches, etc. Then he came upon a dead soldier. The dead soldier was wearing a Brownish Yellowish suit. Henry could tell by looking at him that he was a hard worker, for example by how the soles of his shoes were worn out. Wilson thought he would die so he gave a yellow envelope to Henry to deliver to Wilson's family incase he didn't make it through.

I think this is pretty much like a beginning chapter because it told us lots of information we will need throughout the rest of the book.

Who are the Skirmishers? When they waved the flag what did that mean?

Chapter 2

The next day Henry kept having bad thoughts about himself being in the war. He thought about himself going against what God wants for him even though in the beginning thats what he thought God wanted. The youth was placed by the river watching everything that was going on. Then they found out that the tall soldier had lied about the army moving to a new postion but they had no idea why it had mattered to them. Then a guy tried steeling a lil girls horse but she came outside so he couldn't.
What is the monster they talk about at the end of the chapter? Who is the YOUTH?!?!? What is it that they talk about thats across the river?

Chapter 1

Henry wanted to enlist in the army and his mother tried to stop him but he didn't listen and came back told her that he went out on his own and enlisted himself. She went on telling him that whether he lives or not she will go on living her own life. She knited him 8 pairs of socks, packed all his favorite shirts, and some food so that he could feel comfortable. Later on Henry realized that what he had enlisted to do was hard work. He felt this way and went to go talk to Jim (A guy already in the army) and told him that it was harder work than expected and that he had doubts. Jim had told him that everyone went through that and that it'll be ok and reassured Henry of his decession.
One thing I could see in this chapter would be Youth and Maturity. I say this because Henry was a boy on a farm and he had helped his mother with chores and what not. But then after he had grew up and realized that his call was to go to the army he matured and went upon his duties.
Who is the tall soldier they keep talking about does he have a name? And which war is this? When they talk about the youth towards the end is that just like that camp you have to go to before entering the war?

Characters

Henry Fleming: He wanted to in roll in the army but his mother said no, he didn't care and went about what he was doing and enlisted him self.

Jim Conklin: In the army and tells them they ought to move in and come up behind their enemies.

Wilson: I would say Wilson and Henry are pretty close. For example when Wilson handed over the yellow envelope to take to his family in case he didn't make it he gave it to Henry. Wilson is also known as the loud soldier. He is kinda stubborn.

Tattered soldier:The tattered man represents Henry's scared mentality of the battle, and makes he is the one who makes Henry feel guilty that he keeps running from the battles. He is important because he is showing Henry the affects of the war, and how it affects a person who stays to fight. I also believe that the tattered man shows how much of a coward Henry is for not being in the battle's and always running.

Lieutenant: The lieutenant is Henry's commander/captain. He instructs the regiment throughout the battles. Then in Chapter 5 he gets shot and he dies. Henry had a great relationship with his captain, they gained respect for each other.

Henry's Mother: She's unsure about Henry going to the war in fact she doesn't want him to go at all because she believes its not safe. She knited him 8 pairs of socks and packed his favorite shirts so he would feel as though he was at home.
