1. What does the title of this book mean? Be specific in your response, noting Henry's comments.
That when a soldier gets wounded during battle then they get a red badge because they were courageous and brave. Henry said he was jealous and he wished that he would be wounded so he could have one of them.

2. What is the importance of the tattered man? What does he represent?
The tattered man represents Henry's scared mentality of the battle, and makes he is the one who makes Henry feel guilty that he keeps running from the battles. He is important because he is showing Henry the affects of the war, and how it affects a person who stays to fight. I also believe that the tattered man show's how much of a coward Henry is for not being in the battle's and always running.
3. What role does Henry's mother play while he is away from her?
I think she's always in the back of his mind so he doesn't want to get hurt or die because then he'll be leaving her so he always runs from the battles. She's kind of like his consciences because she's always there with him not literally but figuratively. Especially because she didn't want him to go and he just signed up to go on his own.
4. How does Henry use the squirrel to justify his actions?
He shows how its natural for things in nature to run from things their scared of. So he throws a nut at a squirrel to justify his beliefs.

Good, but make sure you understand they don't actually get a red badge.
